PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION OF BRAND:
Hot brand in block letters, all CAPS. Brand is 1 1/4″ high x 5″ wide.
BACKGROUND:
Hot branded O.H.RIDGEWAY over OXFORD,MD for rig owner Oliver H. Ridgeway (1873-1941), a blacksmith from Oxford MD who passed away in 1941, at which time his rig was dispersed at auction. Decoy maker is unknown, but his style points to Talbot County MD. Last painted as a goldeneye, the decoy may have begun use as a scaup or teal. The brand also is displayed on a canvasback drake by a different unknown maker, and it is logical to assume that several other examples of the brand exist.
THIS BRAND HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED ON THE FOLLOWING DECOYS:
MAKER | SPECIES | SEX | OTHER BRANDS ON DECOY |
---|---|---|---|
Unknown | Goldeneye | Drake | None |
